who actually decreed there should be a World Naked Gardening Day? asked a resident ..... NLN replies on 14th April 2007

In response to the query about WNGD, the event seems to be lead by an American group, and is "a collaborative project founded in May of 2005" by people calling themselves "the Body Freedom Collaborative" (BFC).

'British Naturism', our own national organisation, has decided that 08 Sept is World Naked Gardening Day, apparently piggybacking this date on an event hosted by two delightful nudist gardeners (Abbey House Gardens in Wiltshire) who have already been featured on television.  NLN believes this to be unnecessarily confusing.

Will it make any difference in North Lancing?  Well, NLN has seen a fair few neighbours in the sunshine wearing only a smile.  So don't assume that outdated conventions of modesty have as firm a grip as many suppose.  NLN understands that many will not wish to indulge: but argues that if nothing else is happening that could be construed as misbehaviour, residents should simply leave well alone.  As we used to sing in Sunday School, "You in your small corner and I in mine."

Meanwhile another (unofficial) group, calling themselves "Bare Britain" quotes some fascinating statistics allegedly garnered from estate agents.  The validity of these figures is unproven, but they claim:

"A startling 19.7% of respondents say they have got their kit off outside while at home on at least one occasion, equivalent to around 11 million people.  The figures also suggest people are not going to great lengths to ensure nobody sees them, with 21% saying that they have caught their neighbours in the altogether at some point.

Those in metropolitan areas are more likely than those outside cities to sunbathe nude (21% compared to 16%).  It seems that even though rural homes may be more secluded, city dwellers are less likely to know their neighbours and a greater feeling of anonymity seems to lower metropolitan inhibitions."

Loud partying, domestic disputes and inconsiderate playing of music are said to be greater causes of neighbourly unhappiness than nakedness.

NLN hopes this clarifies matters.

North Lancing nudist comments "5 May 2007 is World Naked Gardening Day"
Get ready for May 5th - the third annual Naked Gardening Day (WNGD).

The few responses to my last offering were at least not hostile to back garden nudism.

How about a North Lancing-wide 'moratorium' on back garden nakedness for at least one day?  Perhaps a few will even enjoy the freedom for the fist time (weather permitting).

Quick thought: who is more anti-social: the residents who do not clear up after their dogs (more power to you, recent contibutors) or the chap/pess who sunbathes in his/her own back garden minus clothing?  And which of these would residents expect the Police to chase with greater alacrity?  How about a Poll on what the community thinks?

Great website  yours aye NLN

A question occurred to me: who actually decreed there should be a World Naked Gardening Day?  And why in May?  It is hardly high summer, is it?  Not, I suspect that that will make much difference in North Lancing even if global warming provides us with a Mediterranean climate!

"when so many of us enjoy clothing-optional beaches and resorts abroad, what is the view of North Lancing residents on back garden nudity?  Is it acceptable if practiced discreetly, or should it be considered a criminal offence in the 21st century?  All comments welcome!

Whilst I agree that you should in the privacy of your own garden agree that you should be able to go nude if you so wish, with respect for possible neighbouring children, would the same rules apply for me being a gay woman??

I think the answer may well be a big resounding NO!!!!!! The reason being that gay people are seen in many peoples eyes as some type of predatory human that would flaunt all and sundry to the neighbours to get their kicks!!  Am I just an old cynic???

As a covert naturist ( when enjoying the quiet and secluded areas of the Sussex countryside ) I would say that your garden is only an extension of your house, but would also have to agree that garden nudism should be practised in  a discreet manner.

My husband would probably laughingly agree with the " needs ironing " bit, but would add that what I show is at least tidily arranged !!!!
So................in conclusion.......................practice garden nudity by all means, but have a thought for your neighbours and any young children they may have, and keep your hedges high and bushy and your fences non-see through.

Well my first impulse was to say "its your garden, do what you like", and If i lived next door to Claudia Schiffer I think I'd still hold that view.  However, on reflection (and imagining most of my near neighbours in the nude) I have concluded that I wouldn't really like to see them so exposed.  Personally I wouldn't be really offended but I can imagine that some people with more delicate sensibilities (or young children) might feel differently.   Overall I think it is beholden to those who want to practice nudism (naturism?) to ensure adequate screening by tree planting so that they can enjoy their liberty without imposing it on others who do not share their views - whether their views are reasonable or not.

My wife hasn't spoken to me since she tried walking about in the nude and I told her that whatever she was wearing needed ironing.
