Ray adds on 30/06/07 I live in central Lancing and am not
inclined to go into any of the pubs on offer, there are all "themed" in
one way or another and not conducive to a quiet pint.
I suspect that the notion of a quiet pub is something from times past
when pubs were not under great pressure to show a significant profit.
even a small independent brewer has to invest loads of money to set up a
business, they are hardly likely to be wanting the customers who just
want a quiet pint.
Why doesn't someone stock a garden shed with a few bottles of ale and
call it open house, no smoking of course!

May I offer another thought for your
"Comments" feature, please? As a resident
of nearly 20 years, I obviously like North
Lancing, but I have to confess that I am
bemused by the fact that we don’t have a
proper pub north of the A27. I don’t count
the Sussex Potter: despite the impressive
facelift, it remains a Beefeater/Harvester
or whatever, not a local resource for those
enamoured of a quiet pint. The Whippet (as
was) is attempting to convert its saloon bar
into an eating area, and it is, strictly
speaking, in Sompting anyway. Would we, as
a village, actually like and support an
old-style pub? Is the idealised image of
the twin centres of the community being the
church and the hostelry, with the Post
Office in 3rd place, a nostalgic
fantasy? Are we becoming a “dormitory
village”, content to climb into motor cars
for our social diversions as much as for
employment? If some would-be publican
attempted to create a Public House in North
Lancing, would it be supported? Where do
those of us who enjoy a pint of ale go at
present?

I also feel that a
local pub for North Lancing would be a benefit to the village
and add to the feeling of being part of a community. Let’s hope
there is a brewery brave enough to make the investment and give
us what we want. |
Hazel adds on 24/04/07I, my husband and
friends would certainly support a "pub" in the North Lancing
area. One to which we can walk and where adults (only) can
enjoy a quiet drink and chat!
