"Crushing
pills"
There has been quite a lot in the papers and
on television recently about the dangers resulting from
people crushing up their prescribed medication in order to
make it easier to swallow. For some tablets, especially
those designed to have a slow release of medication, there
is an increased risk of dramatic side effects if the tablets
are broken or crushed and even if not harmful the duration
of the beneficial effect of such medication will be greatly
shortened.
The problem is that some tablets are quite
large and many people (especially the elderly) have
difficulty swallowing them. Most people throw their tablets
into their mouths and try to wash them down with a glass of
water - unfortunately this is not always successful. To
make life easier - try washing down the tablets with water
drunk from a bottle instead - using a bottle forms the
toungue into a different shape and makes swallowing tablets
much easier, so avoiding the need to crush your tablets.
