What do Osteopaths
do…”backs” ?
Although we are best known for treating back
problems, osteopathy can be applied to any area of the body. It
is based on a system of diagnosis and treatment of faults
occurring in the muscles and joints
caused by damage or misuse.
The osteopath will first gain an
understanding of your problem by taking a thorough medical
history. Next, they are likely to perform a physical
examination, assessing your movements, so as to localise your
pain. The osteopath will then use their finely
tuned palpation skills to feel “what’s happening under the
skin”, to assess the tissue(s) causing
your symptoms. Special tests
to asses nerve function maybe performed if necessary or you
could be referred for further invstigation, like x-rays, if this
is needed.
Treatment will aim at restoring optimum
function within your body’s
capacity to adapt to change. Massage, stretching, articulation
and manipulation are frequently used along with electrotherapy
treatments like ultrasound. In general, treatment is not
painful, although some patients maybe aware of some soreness
following it. This is often only very temporary, and a result of
the body adapting to the changes which have been made. Not all
patients opt to have all forms of treatment. Some prefer not to
have manipulation and the treatment plan is adjusted to
accommodate this. Exercises and postural changes may be
recommended by the osteopath,
to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and to help lessen the
likelihood of recurrence.
