Saturday 19th July 1958 was Lancing and
Sompting Carnival Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lancing. I
thought you would like to be taken back in time to a gentler more
complicated world. We can do this courtesy of John Goodman who supplied
the cuttings and to UE who scanned the image for me. May thanks to John
and UE!
The programme remind you
that the first prize in the raffle is "a 17 in television set donated
with compliments by H Davis Outdoor Amusement Contractor and supplied by
R Shoulders, 3-5 North Road Lancing"
The then Chairman of the
Lancing Parish Council, John Thornberry noted that he "hope they will be
favoured by a fine spell of weather"
On Friday 18th July
there was to be a "Grand Firework Display on Beach Green" by H
Davis, outdoor amusement contractor
On Saturday 19th July
there was to be a "Rescue Demonstration" off Lancing Beach by Shoreham
Lifeboat crew assisted by Rotn. Jack Holmes (weather permitting)
At 4.30 pm the Carnival
Queen was to present prizes and draw winning tickets for TV raffle
In the programme,
Penstone Hotel Lancing (opposite Post Office) had lunch from 12.30 - 2
pm available at 3 shillings

The Worthing Gazette of Wednesday 23rd
July 1958 covered the Carnival.

mile route from Lancing Manor along Upper Boundstone Road, Busticle
Lane, Cokeham Road, Crabtree Lane, North Road and South Street in the
Lancing and Sompting carnival procession on Saturday"
