Sue adds ...
I was born and bred in Brighton. When I moved to Lancing I was amazed at how much slower the pace of life was, how friendly people were and what a wonderful village it was to live in. I have lived here now for 27 years and will never leave it. I don't go into Brighton unless I am absolutely forced to, I much prefer and value the village life of North Lancing. |

M starts us off .......
You ask why people like living in this area. Well in the past it wasn't because of any sense of community. I previously lived in a poorer part of Worthing where neighbours were nearer and walked to their local shops, so meeting more often. The atmosphere was communicative and friendly - whereas, on moving to north lancing I was surprised and disappointed at how little I saw of my neighbours, mainly because they only left their properties when enclosed within the cocoon of their motor vehicles, and a courteous but non-committal nod of the head was the only acknowledgement of each other (guilty of this myself). My wife did meet some of the locals whilst walking her dogs, but only a select few of similar ilk (and they never recognise me). The recent discussions and disputes regarding property development have at least got some of us talking (if not agreeing) and the regular contact through the community association is finally fostering an air of togetherness which I hope will not only continue, but grow into fuller friendships.
So why do people want to live here? - (apart
from the proximity of the downs and the spectacular sea
views). Well, despite the fact that we all moan about the
costs of our properties, it was probably the fact that this
area was a little more expensive than some other parts of
Lancing that attracted us in the first place. The
underlying rational being that, if the neighbourhood was
more expensive we were likely to find better (i.e. well
behaved & respectable) neighbours and, apart from a very
little amount of local yobbery, I believe this has in fact
proved to be the case for most of us - it's just that we
didn't know this until we started talking to each other.
