Tyto -   diary of a puppy

Did you know that your dog must wear a collar and visible means of identification, either an engraved tag or marking on his collar at all times when out in a public place? This should be name and address and telephone no. That public place can be in your car and anywhere the public is allowed. Having your dog micro chipped or tattooed doesn’t count. So, be sure that your dog wears his collar at all times. In certain towns dogs must be kept on lead around highways and by ways. Even in places without this law it makes sense to keep your dog on a lead when there is traffic around and that unsuspecting cat or squirrel that may suddenly appear and cause your dog to give chase. Even the most well trained dogs can have a sudden memory lapse and run off. Also did you know that if your dog frightens a person by unexpectedly barking making the person jump you can be held liable for having a dangerous dog. So, be careful when your dog is playing and that no-one is near enough to be frightened by it playing!

Now that the hot weather has arrived back again be sure that your dog is not in a hot place. Especially the car. The police or RSPCA can gain access to your car if the dog is deemed to be under stress. If in doubt about where you are going to be able to leave your car, leave the dog at home.

When out exercising be sure that you do this at the coolest part of the day. If you do go onto land that has lots of trees or shrubs be careful that there are no places that a snake could be basking. The dog may think it is a stick and get bitten. Then you must get your dog to a vet as quickly as possible. Check your dog over when getting back from a walk for grass darts and any other foreign object that they can get between the toes or in the ears. A quick brush to remove any other grassy bits or other insects helps too.

Make sure that the food is eaten all in one go, or put the remainder in a place that the flies can’t get on to it. Some dogs go off their food in the heat so don’t worry. They will eat when they are hungry. Just make sure that there is fresh water at all times. Refresh the dogs water bowl regularly to keep it from warming up.

Yet again a warning about where to buy your next puppy from. Be careful to check that they are healthy and that if you find that the puppy isn’t, after seeing your vet, that the seller will take him back and refund your money. It is difficult after having set your heart on one but be careful when choosing and make sure that he/she is healthy..
