10th October 2006
I have again met someone with a young puppy that they
have said is very hyperactive. If you have a pup or dog
that you consider to be more hyperactive than is normal
then consider the food that you are giving. Too much
protein can have a bearing on this. So, look at the
container and see what the protein content level is. Wet
foods ie: canned or rolled meat are very high, as once
you take the moisture content away you are left with
considerably more protein than given on the package. Dry
food ie: complete diets, contain just the protein that
is stated on the packet. If you prefer to feed a meat
and biscuit diet, then be aware that some biscuit can be
just as high in protein as complete foods. Relevant
protein levels depend on the breed and age so be careful
which you use. Most breeds can be fed foods that contain
no more than 24% to 26% protein. Never go lower than 22%
for young pups but if it is an older dog then 18% to 22%
can be given. Also consider colourants.
The wet weather has arrived but it is still quite warm,
so be careful when leaving your dog in the car. Also
when letting them have a run off lead watch for that
muddy ground that can hide so many problems like glass,
sharp stones etc. Always check pads and look for burrs
etc that can get stuck in between the pads and round
those fluffy ears.
November the 5th is just around the corner so
if you have a dog that doesn’t like fireworks you could
invest in a dap diffuser, which can be bought from your
vet; instructions are on the packaging. Or, make sure
that you have taken your dog out for his last walk in
the daylight and then close curtains and windows, switch
a light on and turn the tv or radio up just a bit. Don’t
make too much fuss of him/her if he/she shows fear. Let
them find their own corner to curl up in. Chamomila can
help to calm them down. This can be bought from any
homeopathic outlet. Don’t leave it too late before
getting these items.
I will be letting you all know who passed next week
after we have given out certificates and Andy has been
to take photos.
Take
Care with your dogs.
