Now that you have
had your puppy for about 6 weeks it will be approaching the time to go out
for a more exciting look at the world. Obviously this will depend on the age
of your pup. But, all pups can go out for short walks when they have had all
their inoculations. Before their inoculations they can still go out but only
carried or in the car. They can also go to training/socialising classes as
long as the trainer and vet have said that it is alright. This is dependant
on the pup having had its first inoculation and being carried into the place
where the classes are held.
When you first
start to take your pup out into the big wide world take it to a quiet place
so that it is not startled by noisy traffic and too many legs rushing by. Be
sure to have some tasty treats or a favourite toy to encourage the pup to
stay by your side. Make sure that the collar is not too loose or the pup
could back out of it. Also make sure that the lead is not too long, it could
get tangled in the pups legs if it stops suddenly. Also make sure that it is
comfortable to the hands. There is nothing worse than a lead that is
uncomfortable to the hands. But if you hold the lead lightly in the hand and
do not allow the pup to pull then this should not be a problem. When the pup
starts to walk try to encourage it to stay by your side with the use of your
treats or toy. If the pup stops and wants to go a different way then go that
way at first. This is so the pup is not frightened to walk. A lot of pups
find walking out in the streets daunting. When it is older it will soon be
willing to go the way that you want to go. Don’t be in too much of a hurry
to let your pup off lead until you are sure that it will come back every
time that you call it.
To teach the pup
sit, wait until it is in that position, then say the word sit and praise it.
The same with any other positions. Always wait until the pup is in the
position and then put the word to that position and praise.
