Your
prior EMail about the cross Downs walk to Coombes brings back some very old
and fond memories of living in your area and the many treks our Family
took up to the Downs when we were little , mostly in search of wild
blackberries and Mushrooms.
These
expeditions were also augmented by Sunday morning trips to the Beach armed
with our shrimping nets to catch our Sunday teatime shrimp feed. It would
have been nice to join your group on the walk, although I can't walk too far
nowadays without having a good rest.
I could
have made it to the Corner House though (Sussex Potter now I believe) as I
did sometimes in my youth. Also the Balltree, the Railway, the Crabtree,
the Gardeners, the Marquis and the Farmers.
I lived
in Lancing from 1940 to 1957 moving there from Greenwich when the Blitz got
too hot. I went to South Lancing school and then to the Worthing High School
for Boys and then to Brighton Tech College. I commuted to work for some
years back to London Bridge with British Rail then was at Shoreham Airport
with F.G. Miles which was my last job before emigrating. I stayed
in Worthing for a few months in 1957 and then sailed for
Canada. I can’t believe it will be 50 years next year!!
I
remember working at Greets Nursery Gardens in my summer hols. I believe it
was on Freshbrook Road? and some others. I even home delivered wines and
spirits on a bicycle with a basket on the front for Roberts & Sons , the
wine merchants on Sompting Road near the Rec. ground ...... tricky in the
Winter if the front wheel slid with the weight all there !!
Played
Cricket for one of the Junior Lancing teams at the Lancing Manor grounds on
occasions and also was a choirboy at St James the Less Church. I was a
member of the Sea Cadet Corp in Worthing ...... TSS Vanguard.
We first
lived on Sompting Road in a little bungalow named "Amaranth” near Elms Drive
then we moved into council Houses at the foot of Cokeham Lane just off
Tower Road. It has been well over 22 years since I was in Lancing and so I
have lost sight and memory of many of the favourite spots that we had. Some
good times were found cycling to Arundel and then
renting a rowboat on the Arun to row down river to a favourite Sunday tea
spot on the Banks of the river. Dancing at The Assembly Hall in Worthing on
Saturday nights.
Got
married in 1957 at Steyne Gardens Methodist church in Worthing. Those were
the days and I enjoyed those years of my life and will always have the fond
memories to associate with.
Not
likely any of my Buddies are still in the area, but you never know. Best
Wishes to all there for 2006 and cherish your little part of England
....... I do !!!
I now live in the South Western part
of Ontario in a town called Grand Bend on the shores of Lake Huron.
